Pre-intermediate/Intermediate Level (A2/B1)
People can say ‘have to’ or ‘have got to’ but there are some differences in how we say them:
‘I have to’ but not ‘I’ve to’ BUT ‘I’ve got to’ is OK
In ‘I have to’, ‘have’ is pronounced ‘haf‘
There is often (but not always!) a difference between ‘have to / have got to‘ and ‘must‘. Look at these examples:
Because of another person’s decision:
- I’m not happy because my manager said I have to / I’ve got to work on Sunday
- I have to / I’ve got to prepare a presentation for university
Because of my choices or decisions:
- I must eat less chocolate
- I must remember to phone my mother
Good luck!
