April 23rd is St George’s Day. It is thought to be Shakespeare’s birthday too, as well as the date of his death. St George is believed to have been born in what is now Turkey. His mother was a Palestinian and he became a Roman soldier. He is patron saint of England but also Ethiopia, Georgia, Egypt, Iraq, Greece, Portugal, Russia and more. Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon 448 years ago. Today his plays are performed across the world. Maybe it’s better to regard both as truly international!
